Speaker: Dr Peter Kentish, Lecturer and Consultant, University of South Australia
Materials in service do not always perform as intended by the designer. Both chemical and mechanical failures are not uncommon and at times there is not a clear distinction between the causes. The cost of corrosion to industry and the community is significant and it will never be eliminated. It is best controlled by education, not only of those with an engineering background but also those in management where economic decisions must be considered. Even a basic knowledge of the factors and variables influencing corrosion is helpful when attempting to comprehend the implications of possibilities proposed by “experts”.
Peter Kentish is a metallurgical engineer with over 30 year experience investigating materials failures. A graduate of University of South Australia, he has been employed by
CRA, Hamersley Iron, Amdel and currently the University of South Australia. His presentation will use case studies to explain some principles of corrosion, their causes and
options for prevention. It will give an introduction to the processes involved when investigating component failures and an insight into the various deterioration modes by which a component may ultimately fail.

Speaker: Artur Zawadski, Manager, Business Development, Wizard Power Pty Limited, Canberra
Wizard Power is building a $14.5 million demonstration solar power plant at Whyalla providing a zero emission dispatchable (on-demand) power supply. The plant which incorporates “The Big Dish” (the world’s largest paraboloidal solar concentrator system) captures and concentrates solar energy to generate high temperatures that can be used for thermochemical energy storage and power generation. The Plant is at the forefront of solar power technology. The presentation will introduce you to:
- Why this project was successful in securing a Greenhouse Office Grant
- The unique ammonia-dissociation based thermo-chemical energy storage system
- The Big Dish solar thermal concentrator and demonstration plant design
- Current status of the plant, expected results and outcomes.
- Other thermo-chemical applications for the solar technology
Is 24 hour solar thermal power likely to be a viable alternative to nuclear power in sunny locations? This is a rare chance to hear the answer to this and your other solar energy questions from an Australian solar energy expert.

Speaker: Dr Murray Townsend
South Australia’s population is very much gathered around its coast. Over the years, this has presented a number of challenges for coastal managers and engineers. Over the last two decades, climate change has become recognised as one of the major threats to the sustainability of coastal communities and it is projected to have a number of severe impacts over the next 100 years across all aspects of society and the environment, many of which come together on the coast. In addition to the effects of increased temperatures and lower rainfall, the coast will experience major pressures from direct and indirect impacts of rising sea levels. This presentation will address science and engineering aspects of the major coastal hazards and discuss a range of expected impacts from climate change. It will describe how these are being managed by the SA Coast Protection Board, through re search, delivery of coastal protection works, mainly through local government, and development control.

Venue: Gill Langley Room, Adelaide Oval
Who: Open to members of IET/IEEE and the public
RSVP: Registration is essential before 13 May, refer to above brochure.
Presentation by Byron Heath
A dramatic account of the efforts of electrical power engineers to overcome severe, load-limiting, vibration problems with two 150 MW turbo-generators during commissioning of Gordon Power Station in 1977 while facing increasing public environmental criticism of the intrusion of hydro-power into native forests. Concurrently, and within a few kilometres of the Gordon turbo-generators incredible archaeological discoveries were being made which were obscured by the power scheme debate but which will probably be remembered long after the environmental and technical problems associated with Gordon Power Station have been forgotten.
