JTP Mech: Integrated Waste Management in the Marine Environment

Mechanical & Manufacturing Joint Technical Programme Event. Note that this event supersedes the previously programmed event of a visit to the DSTO.

Where:
Engineers House, Chapman Hall, 11 Bagot Street, North Adelaide
When:
6.15pm Tuesday 13th May 2008
Refreshments from 5:30pm
Who:
All visitors with an interest in Mechanical Engineering are welcome to attend (please RSVP).

Integrated Waste Management

Traditional, on-board Navy and commercial vessels waste systems are seen as separate, unrelated
entities, each having its own supplier and interface challenges. The various liquid and solid waste
streams have no commonality and are discharged/stored without thought for cross-connection to
other systems. This is manpower-intensive, has health and safety implications, is a poor use of
space, and generates increasing port reception costs.
Unification of the individual treatment technologies through an Integrated Waste Management allows:

  • Optimisation of the operation of each piece of equipment
  • Flexibility under varying demands;
  • A largely autonomous processing capability; and
  • Production of less waste to discharge or store.

With an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) the operation and maintenance activities are
simplified and onboard storage of waste is minimized. Crucially, the IWMS facilitates the world-wide
operation of the vessel through compliance to environmental legislation with the potential to meet
future more stringent legislation.

Campanology

by Dr Matthew Sorell

Abstract:

If you look out across the Adelaide Oval, you will see the spires of St Peter’s Cathedral, home to the heaviest octave of change-ringing bells outside of the British Isles. The music is unique to England and its colonies, based on continuous cycling of permutations following similar rules to the Rubik’s Cube, alphabetical sorting and cryptography. Change-ringing, or Anglo-Campanology, has its roots in the 11th Century and its mathematical formulation was documented centuries before pure mathematicians came up with their own version, known as Combinatorial Group Theory.
This talk will introduce you to the change-ringing bells of Adelaide, and provide you with an insight into the sport, music, mathematics and engineering of this obsessive hobby.

The Great Environment Briefing & Daylight Savings

Dear all,

The Adelaide & Darwin time for The Great Environment Briefing web-cast event on 10th April was previously incorrect due to not considering the end of daylight savings. The Great Environment Briefing will commence from 3:30am Adelaide & Darwin time for a 4:30am start. This error has been amended on this website although unfortunately the email all members have received will still be incorrect. Apologies for any confusion.

Note: Darwin does not participate in daylight savings, therefore Adelaide will become Darwin time as of 3am Sunday April 6th when Adelaide turns our clocks back to 2am.

Flinders plans new Engineering courses

OliviaFlinders University has positioned itself to make a major contribution to the most dynamic sectors of the State’s economy with plans to offer five new Bachelor of Engineering courses in 2009, according to the Chancellor, Sir Eric Neal.

The new courses will build on the University’s teaching and research strengths in biomedical, robotics, electronics, computer systems and software engineering and will equip graduates for careers in such diverse industries as medicine, mining, defence and industry,” Sir Eric said.

For further information visit Inspiring Engineering.

Extract from Vice-Chancellor’s letter:

I am very pleased to advise you that Flinders University has positioned itself to make a major contribution to the most dynamic sectors of the State’s economy by offering five new Bachelor of Engineering courses in 2009. The new courses build on the University’s teaching and research strengths in biomedical, robotics, electronics, computer systems, and software engineering and will equip graduates for careers in such diverse industries as medicine, mining, defence and industry. Flinders’ strong commitment to teaching engineering reflects the current and anticipated high demand for highly skilled professional engineers across the private and public sectors of the economy.

South Australia is witnessing extraordinary growth in the defence and mining sectors which are establishing long term design and construction capabilities in this State. Flinders intends making the maximum contribution possible to the skills and experience required for this emerging and highly sophisticated industrial base. The University is also an active supporter of efforts by the State and Federal governments and the business sector to stimulate new and expanded small to medium enterprises in Adelaide’s southern regions. Boosting the available pool of engineering graduates will ensure that the required skills are available in a post-Mitsubishi era as new business and employment opportunities are explored and realised. It is clear from student admissions information that a recent State-wide lift in interest in engineering courses is not reflected by applicants from the southern region of Adelaide, suggesting the absence of some courses in this area is affecting the first course preferences of some students.

The five new Bachelor of Engineering courses to be offered by Flinders will address that unmet need. Flinders’ nationally recognised industry placement program provides students with 20 weeks of structured industrial work experience with one of 100 local, national and international organisations - often leading to an ongoing employment with that company. This element of our engineering program distinguishes Flinders’ courses from their counterparts and is well regarded by students and host companies alike.

The new courses are:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Software)

Further detailed information on the new courses, and the other engineering courses offered at Flinders can be found at: www.flinders.edu.au/engineering.
Flinders looks forward to working with you in an exciting period ahead for universities, engineers, the business sector and the State economy.

Yours sincerely,
Professor Michael N Barber
Vice-Chancellor

BETNET 2008

BETNET 2008

Welcome to BETNET 2008 - Engineering the Next Generation of Buildings and Facilities

BETNET 2008 aims to bring together a diverse range of people with a common interest in the area of the built environment. The technical programme will contain a combination of tutorials, papers and keynote speakers, addressing the breadth of the built environment.

Call for papers

The organising committee invites offers of contributions in any of the proposed topic areas. The deadline for papers is 15th April 2008.

Background

For the first time in human existence more than 50 per cent of the world’s population (over 3 billion people) are living in urban environments. This proportion is rising rapidly. Millions more people will move from the countryside to the cities in the next 15 years. Such population movements are totally unprecedented and represent a tremendous challenge to the creativity and skills of engineers, designers and technologists.

The impacts of this mass urbanisation are clear to see, soaring energy consumption, major air pollution and CO2 generation contributing significantly to global warming. Water shortage and pollution, alternative energy sources, transport and infrastructure overload and massive waste management issues. Such issues will only be resolved by developing and delivering world class engineering solutions on a global basis.

Who should attend

This event is aimed at delegates with the following roles:

  • Building Services Engineering Consulting Engineers
  • M&E Contracting Engineers
  • M&E Consulting Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers
  • Technician Engineers
  • Facility Managers
  • Facility Engineers
  • Structural Engineers
  • I.T. and Systems Engineers
  • Architects and Property developers

Workshops

In addition to a two day conference programme addressing leading-edge built environment topics; BETNET 2008 – Engineering the Next Generation of Buildings and Facilities will be preceded by a one day series of Workshops which will draw upon the practical experiences of presenters including international experts from within the built environment area, specialist consultancies and academic centres of excellence.
