The Plant is at the forefront of solar power technology. The presentation will introduce you to:

  • Why this project was successful in securing a Greenhouse Office Grant
  • The unique ammonia-dissociation based thermo-chemical energy storage system
  • The Big Dish solar thermal concentrator and demonstration plant design
  • Current status of the plant, expected results and outcomes.
  • Other thermo-chemical applications for the solar technology

Is 24 hour solar thermal power likely to be a viable alternative to nuclear power in sunny locations? This is a rare chance to hear the answer to this and your other solar energy questions from an Australian solar energy expert.

JTP Mech: Climate Change and Coastal Management in South Australia

Mechanical & Manufacturing Joint Technical Programme Event

Where: Engineers House, 11 Bagot St, North Adelaide

coast
Speaker: Dr Murray Townsend

South Australia’s population is very much gathered around its coast. Over the years, this has presented a number of challenges for coastal managers and engineers. Over the last two decades, climate change has become recognised as one of the major threats to the sustainability of coastal communities and it is projected to have a number of severe impacts over the next 100 years across all aspects of society and the environment, many of which come together on the coast. In addition to the effects of increased temperatures and lower rainfall, the coast will experience major pressures from direct and indirect impacts of rising sea levels. This presentation will address science and engineering aspects of the major coastal hazards and discuss a range of expected impacts from climate change. It will describe how these are being managed by the SA Coast Protection Board, through re search, delivery of coastal protection works, mainly through local government, and development control.

An Engineering Puzzle with an Archaeological Surprise

When: Wednesday 20 May 2009, 12 noon for 1:00pm
Venue: Gill Langley Room, Adelaide Oval
Who: Open to members of IET/IEEE and the public
RSVP: Registration is essential before 13 May, refer to above brochure.

Presentation by Byron Heath

A dramatic account of the efforts of electrical power engineers to overcome severe, load-limiting, vibration problems with two 150 MW turbo-generators during commissioning of Gordon Power Station in 1977 while facing increasing public environmental criticism of the intrusion of hydro-power into native forests. Concurrently, and within a few kilometres of the Gordon turbo-generators incredible archaeological discoveries were being made which were obscured by the power scheme debate but which will probably be remembered long after the environmental and technical problems associated with Gordon Power Station have been forgotten.

New email subscription list

The IET SA & NT Local Network Committee recognises the importance of keeping members and non-members alike, informed with the latest news and events in our Local Network.

To date, our Local Network newsletters and event programs have been distributed to members only, by both paper copy and by email. However, it is an unnecessary waste to post paper copies if members are happy to receive an electronic only copy. Additionally, to date the functionality for members and non-members alike to subscribe to email updates of new content on this website has not existed.

As of today you can now subscribe to our new email subscription list on the right hand side of this site. Instructions for doing so, including how to unsubscribe and manage your preference to receive paper copies of newsletters and event programs, is also provided on the right hand side of this site.

EESA Event: Carbon Constrained Future

Electric Energy Society of Australia

Where: Engineers House, Chapman Hall, 11 Bagot Street, North Adelaide.
When: 5.45pm Wednesday 6th May 2009. Refreshments from 5:00pm.

This event is hosted by the Electric Energy Society of Australia.

Coma along and find out what the carbon emission target for 2020 is planning to achieve.

Speaker: David Swift of ESPIC

This seminar is to provide National and South Australian perspectives of the future profiles in electricity generation,
taking planned carbon level constraints into consideration.
National Perspective: ACIL Tasman prepared a report for the esaa in July 2008, “The Impact of an ETS on the
Energy Supply Industry”. This report presents the results of year 2020 simulations of the electricity markets for
“business as usual” conditions and for target percentage reductions in carbon emissions from the year 2000 levels.
Paul is to present the results of this study, up dated for the newly established carbon emission target (of 5%
reduction on year 2000 levels).
South Australian Perspective: This presentation is to give projections of the expected load growth in South Australia
to 2020 and the potential new generation capabilities required for “business as usual” and with the carbon emission
and renewable energy targets taken into account. The potential impacts on the South Australian power system
and the national grid will also be considered.

Please watch the organiser’s website for changes to the above. If you find this event interesting you may certainly find many other EESA events interesting, so please keep an eye on their events schedule.

New Developments in Diesel Technology

When: 1 April 2009, 1pm
Venue: Room LG24, (Lower) Napier Building, University of Adelaide
Who: Open to members of IET/IEEE and the public

Presentation by M Zockel

Diesel engines have been around for over a century now and until the last decade, were frequently described as noisy, smelly and slow to respond to the accelerator. About 10 years ago electronically controlled injectors were developed and these have, in my opinion, revolutionized the compression ignition (CI) combustion process.
After a brief review of the fuel and combustion requirements of CI engines I intend to describe the new injection and pressurizing systems and discuss their effects on the combustion process, noise and emissions.

Professional Network Dinner 2009

PND2009

Introduction

The IET South Australia & Northern Territory Local Network will be, pending successful sponsorship, holding a Professional Network Dinner on the evening of 17 July 2009 at the National Wine Centre, Adelaide.

The Professional Network Dinner (PND2009) is intended to provide a unique opportunity to connect academia, industry and government with the best and most enthusiastic final year engineering students during an evening of fine food, fine drink and fine company.

The targeted industry will be that which may recruit Graduate Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Mechatronic Engineers in 2010.

Invitation to sponsor and attend

It is with great pleasure that the IET SA & NT Local Network invite members of industry to sponsor a table at a cost of $1000. Table sponsorship allows up to five engineers from your company per sponsored table to dine with 5 final year engineering students who will be allocated to your table. Seating arrangements can be negotiated, i.e. whether your company would like all 5 delegates on one table, or spread over tables to maximise exposure. Student seating arrangements will be suited to best match that of your companies needs. The Heads of Engineering Schools at UniSA, University of Adelaide, and Flinders University, will be invited to select the students to attend, based on their proven academic performance, enthusiasm and drive.

In times of economic hardship, it is important for industry to be employing the best quality graduates rather than quantity, in order to get the most “bang for their buck”. The Professional Network Dinner gives you the opportunity to meet with and promote your company to the best engineering students available.

Interest in sponsoring a table, or other proposals to sponsor the event are appreciated by mid March 2009, so that we can send you further information.

Previous event

Professional Network Dinner & Australian Technical Paper Prize

The first Professional Network Dinner was held in the Adelaide Museum by the then IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) Branch, now IET (Institution of Engineering & Technology) Local Network, in Adelaide in 2004. It was a highly successful event, attracting sponsors including ETSA Utilities, ElectraNet, and GHD. Sir Eric Neal was the guest speaker of the evening. The then Australian Technical Papers Prize (now known as the South Pacific Present Around the World) was also presented on this evening. A Professional Network Dinner has not been held since 2004 due to the tremendous effort required by volunteer committee members of the IET.

How to help

As a member or non-member of the IET, it would be of great assistance to bring this event to the attention of your engineering employer if they might be interested in recruiting graduate Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Mechatronic Engineers in 2010. Please contact the Honorary Chairman should you have any suggestions for potential sponsors for the event.

Further Information / Contact

Please do not hesitate to contact the Honorary Chairman should you have any questions concerning this event.
