Conventional computer aided design (CAD) packages have more recently expanded into product data management (PDM) platforms. A PDM is a design platform that integrates design tools, design information databases and a virtual design space. The next development in CAD platforms must follow the deployed product into operations, and accrue product reliability and usage data. This paper proposes that a Product Body of Knowledge (PBK) is established at the outset of the product design cycle, and data developed at each phase of the product life cycle be integrated into the PBK. The design-operation relationship of the product, its impact on product assurance and product sustainment, and the role of the PBK in sustaining the product throughout its life cycle provide the rational for the establishment of an active PBK. PBK processes and business protocols cross map accrued product reliability and usage data filed in the PDM databases. These comparisons yield product improvement designs, which are processed by the PBK through testing, manufacture and deployment.
