JTP Elec: Square Kilometre Array

Status, Technology and Australia’s Role in this International Mega-Science Project

SKA

Electrical & Electronic Joint Technical Program Event, hosted by TSA.

Engineers House, Chapman Hall, 11 Bagot Street, North Adelaide
Updated: 6.15pm Wednesday 4th April 2007
Refreshments from 5:30pm

Speaker: Dr Carole Jackson, Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), CSIRO Sydney

Radio astronomers worldwide are planning to construct a continental sized distributed radio telescope. Australia has submitted its bid to host this SKA. The decision where the telescope will be placed is expected in 2010. Wherever placed, the construction of the SKA presents some massive electronic engineering challenges for science and industry.

Australian Technical Presentation Prize and Gala Dinner

Each year the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly the IEE) runs a “Present Around the World” competition, which in Australia takes the form of the “Australian Technical Presentation Prize” (ATPP) open to final year university students in disciplines within the scope of the IET. These include electrical, electronic, manufacturing and systems engineering and related sciences such as information technology and computing.

Each Australian State runs its own competition culminating in a State Final, with the winner proceeding to the National Final early in the following year (which is usually shortly after graduation). Later that year the National winner goes on to UK to compete in the World Final (the IET International Premium) and take part in an associated Younger Members Conference at that time.

The first National Final was held in Melbourne in 2002. It was again in Melbourne in 2003 but moved to Adelaide in 2004 where the winner was Kerrin Pine of South Australia who spoke on “Radio Direction Finding for Maritime Search & Rescue”. It moved to Perth in 2005 from where the winner, Tim Nelson again of South Australia who spoke on his robotic eye project “EyeSim”, went on to win the international event held in Birmingham UK in November 2005. Last year in Sydney the National winner was Kelly Poole of NSW whose topic was “Design of Zigbee systems: concept and implementation”, the gauging of student understanding in real time during lectures.

And now it’s Queensland’s turn. This year’s National Final will be held in Brisbane on Friday 30 March, the competition itself at the Novotel Hotel in the morning and the Presentation Dinner at Gianni’s Portside Restaurant in the evening. Details below, and all are encouraged to attend. Pre-registration for the Dinner is necessary, and the form for this is attached.

The Competition

Friday 30 March 2007 - 10.00 am to 12.30 pm
National Final of the IET Australian Technical Presentation Prize (ATPP)
Novotel Hotel, 200 Creek Street, Brisbane.
NO ADMISSION CHARGE.

The Gala Dinner

Friday 30 March 2007 - 6.45 pm for 7.15 pm
IET National Gala Dinner and ATPP Awards Presentation
Gianni’s Portside Restaurant, Remora Road, Hamilton.
See attachment for costs and registration

Also keep an eye on the National IET website for more information regarding this event.

Please note that these are IET National events, but the main organisation has been delegated to the IET Queensland Younger Members Section. As per the attachment, emailed returns are to be made to the YMS Chairman Tony Richardson. Also as per the attachment, any telephoned queries should be to Tony on 0424 578 224.

Tony says:

The IET ATPP is primarily a presentation skills competition. However, the topic should be relevant to IET endeavours and the speaker should target the presentation appropriately. Designing the latest gadgets and widgets is one thing; convincing people of their successful operation and commercial merit is another. The ATPP is a way for final year students enrolled in Engineering and Technology courses to test their skills in this area, so come along and support your future colleagues and fellow students.

Updated: Joint Technical Programs 2007

The IET is involved in forming both the Electrical and Electronic and Mechanical Joint Technical Programs (JTP’s) for 2007.

Electrical and Electronic JTP of sites visits and talks for 2007

The Electrical and Electronic Joint Technical program is a joint seminar program organised by the IET, IEEE, TSA and EA each year.
The program provides free sites visits and talks on electrical and electronic related topics of interest for the members of these institutions.

These events are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Please have a look at the program for the up coming events.
