Speaker: Dr Murray Townsend
South Australia’s population is very much gathered around its coast. Over the years, this has presented a number of challenges for coastal managers and engineers. Over the last two decades, climate change has become recognised as one of the major threats to the sustainability of coastal communities and it is projected to have a number of severe impacts over the next 100 years across all aspects of society and the environment, many of which come together on the coast. In addition to the effects of increased temperatures and lower rainfall, the coast will experience major pressures from direct and indirect impacts of rising sea levels. This presentation will address science and engineering aspects of the major coastal hazards and discuss a range of expected impacts from climate change. It will describe how these are being managed by the SA Coast Protection Board, through re search, delivery of coastal protection works, mainly through local government, and development control.
