Speaker:
Mr Graham Haywood, United Group Rail

Rail operator Pacific National has ordered a fleet of new 92 Class locomotives from United Group Rail. These locomotives have many new features compared to earlier classes of locomotive, including the use of AC Traction Motor technology sourced from General Electric in the USA. This presentation will outline the features of the new locomotive, and provide an insight into the challenges of designing, building, testing, commissioning and certifying a new locomotive type in Australia.

Graham Haywood is the Product Development Platforms Manager for UGL Rail. His responsibilities include
development and commissioning of the new 92 Class locomotive. Graham has had a 46 year career in the rail industry, commencing with South Australian Railways where he had a number of engineering, maintenance and management roles. He went on to represent Queensland Rail during the building of the 3400 Class electric locomotives by Clyde Engineering in the mid 1990s before joining A Goninan & Co in an Applications Engineering role, involved in the engineering tendering and configuration of equipment for diesel electric locomotives. Goninan became United Group Rail, and are involved in rail vehicle design, manufacturing, asset management, maintenance and refurbishment.

Data Fusion is the correlation of data from multiple sources so as to extract more and better information than could be obtained from the individual sources of data. It has many and varied civilian and military applications, including: weather forecasting, battlefield assessment, target classification, transportation management, etc. This talk contends that demands on the data fusion community are beginning to exceed its historical roots in sensor fusion, by requiring greater development of automated situation and impact assessments, and more appropriate integration with humans engaged in fusion activity. The talk will offer a blueprint with seven building blocks for the design of higher-level fusion systems.

The Woomera Test Facility (WTF), which is operated by the RAAF Aerospace Operational Support Group (AOSG), is being heavily used for a diverse range of Defence and non-Defence air, space and ground trials. Recent and upcoming Australian Defence Force (ADF) programs include air-to-ground missile trials, bomb improvement trials, HyCAUSE and HIFiRE hypersonic trials, Explosive Ordnance activities and Electronic Warfare trials. Non-Defence programs include testing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Japanese supersonic airplane trials and also the targeted landing of the Hayabusa asteroid sample return capsule in the Woomera Prohibited Area in mid 2010. This talk will present an overview of the WTF together with a selection of contemporary Australian and international trials that highlight the unique capabilities of the WTF as the largest land-based Test and Evaluation range in the world.

When:

Traditional, on-board Navy and commercial vessels waste systems are seen as separate, unrelated
entities, each having its own supplier and interface challenges. The various liquid and solid waste
streams have no commonality and are discharged/stored without thought for cross-connection to
other systems. This is manpower-intensive, has health and safety implications, is a poor use of
space, and generates increasing port reception costs.
Unification of the individual treatment technologies through an Integrated Waste Management allows:

Optimisation of the operation of each piece of equipment

Flexibility under varying demands;

A largely autonomous processing capability; and

Production of less waste to discharge or store.

With an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) the operation and maintenance activities are
simplified and onboard storage of waste is minimized. Crucially, the IWMS facilitates the world-wide
operation of the vessel through compliance to environmental legislation with the potential to meet
future more stringent legislation.

Campanology

by Dr Matthew Sorell

Abstract:

If you look out across the Adelaide Oval, you will see the spires of St Peter’s Cathedral, home to the heaviest octave of change-ringing bells outside of the British Isles. The music is unique to England and its colonies, based on continuous cycling of permutations following similar rules to the Rubik’s Cube, alphabetical sorting and cryptography. Change-ringing, or Anglo-Campanology, has its roots in the 11th Century and its mathematical formulation was documented centuries before pure mathematicians came up with their own version, known as Combinatorial Group Theory.
This talk will introduce you to the change-ringing bells of Adelaide, and provide you with an insight into the sport, music, mathematics and engineering of this obsessive hobby.
